Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken on the site. Two possible Bronze Age barrow sites a km to the east of the site suggested contemporary settlement. Although the density of prehistoric finds in the Avon valley was usually high, there was no direct evidence to suggest activity in this particular area. The site was shown to have been within the eastern edge of a large medieval common field called Avon field, belonging to the manor of Avon Tyrrell, which can be traced back to the Domesday Survey of 1086. It seemed that the site had been used as arable for the last thousand years. The common fields were shown in great detail on an estate map of 1764, but they had been enclosed forming the present field pattern by 1839. Estate documents recording exchanges of land in the years 1815-6 suggested the final enclosure of the common field took place around this time. The density of prehistoric sites and finds within the Avon valley indicated that further archaeological fieldwork should be considered for a project of this size and should be carried out during development.
