Abstract: |
A desk-based study to assess the archaeological impact of the construction of office and car parking on land at Riverside Exchange was undertaken. The study identified that a number of potentially significant industrial archaeological sites lay within the proposed development area. It was considered that any evidence for the construction and operation of the early Marshalls cementation and crucible furnace sites would be of particular archaeological interest. Similarly, evidence for the system of water power feeding rolling mills (e.g. the wheelpit) would add significant knowledge to the history of technology within the site. It was also noted that although the proposed development did not extend up to the present day waterfront, it would potentially impinge upon putative medieval and earlier waterfronts which would now lie buried inland under the present canalised stream.
