Abstract:
A desk-top study of Stoke Park Hospital, Bristol was intended to provide an assessment of the site's archaeological resource and to revise and update an earlier desk-top study of the northern part of the site (Wessex Archaeology, 1994). The study was restricted to the medieval and earlier aspects of the entire site area and to features pre-dating and/or related to the house, park and gardens of Stoke Park, as a survey of the history of Stoke Park from 1700 onwards had already been undertaken (Land Use Consultants, 1991). Few finds or features of prehistoric or Roman date were known from the site, however, several medieval features were. Most of the known features were post-medieval, many relating to the gardens and other structures associated with Stoke House. It was considered likely that these features had been truncated by the construction of the hospital buildings, although traces may have survived. [Au(abr)]
