Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed development which comprised the refurbishment and extension of buildings on the site, connected by a glass hub. The site was situated in the southern part of Folkestone, which lay on a sandy ledge to the south of the chalk downs. The few findspots in the vicinity suggested that the area was outside the main focus of activity until the post-medieval period. There was a low potential for prehistoric remains, a low potential for Roman and medieval remains and a high potential for post-medieval remains. The area of the site was likely to have been open fields and waste until the later post-medieval period: the impact on any buried archaeological deposits prior to this time was likely to have been slight. During the later post-medieval period and into the 20th century the site was developed in successive stages, resulting in the buildings that were extant at the time of assessment. A number of buildings were constructed and demolished as the area developed and this development may have resulted in the destruction of earlier archaeological horizons. The extant buildings on the site dated from the late post-medieval period; there were few internal features relating to the buildings use as a glassworks and no indication that glass was made on the premises. The buildings were considered to have been of low historical value; some small-scale recording was suggested as mitigation for the proposed development. [Au(adp)] |
