Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site and its immediate vicinity prior to its proposed residential development. The site was located on the River Thames Flood Plain, an area of growing importance related to prehistoric land use and soil formations, resulting from River Thames level flucatations. The area was just beyond the presently known mid to late Saxon settlement of Westminster. Throughout the medieval period the site was generally within an area called Tothill Fields. In the post-medieval period the area was developed due to its proximity to Westminster and the Royal parks. It was apparent that in 1642 Civil War defences, a ditch and bank conplex, ran south-east to north-west through the site. The site had been continuously occupied from the late 18th century onwards. In the mid 19th to mid 20th century the site was substantially occupied by two massive gas holders and later by an office building, all of which had involved substantial ground works. [Au(adp)] |
