Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed redevelopment. The site was situated adjacent to two Archaeological Priority Areas, but did not contain any SAM or Listed Buildings. The site may have been subject to significant human activity particularly within the medieval and post-medieval periods. The majority of evidence from the medieval period related to the presence of Clerkenwell Priory, 230m to the east of the site. The site appeared to have been first developed in the late 17th early 18th century, and then grew rapidly. The general impact upon any archaeological remains which may have existed upon the site, depended upon the extent and depth of the current basements that existed upon the site. Due to the unknown nature of the basements and the fact that, as yet, no geotechnical investigations had been conducted it was recommended that they be carried out to determine the nature of the basementing. It was recommended that an archaeologist observed these geotechnical investigations to determine the extent of any archaeological material. [Au(abr)] |
