Abstract: |
<summary2>The main aims of the survey were to assess the state of knowledge of archaeological sites and landscapes in the Welsh Marches (western Herefordshire and western Shropshire), to provide a basis for improving that knowledge, and to make recommendations and to draft policies for the management of the surviving resource, in the context of continuing and developing threats to its survival. Within the overall upland survey area, 20 transects were designated for detailed study, with the aim of providing a representative sample of a number of topographical variables. Transects were aligned perpendicular to the distributions of geology and soils and to the topography of the areas. Other variables considered were fieldwork history and the distribution of recorded archaeological sites, aerial photographic coverage, land-use, and management potential. Survey work comprised data collection from Sites and Monuments Records, the rapid assimilation of supplementary data from published and readily available unpublished sources, rapid field survey to identify the location and condition of monuments, and aerial survey. |
