Abstract: |
The watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of four test pits. All the layers exposed in test pit 1 were of 20th century date. Test pit 2 was excavated against the south wall of the building, and the slightly battered granite plinth of the structure was exposed for the full depth of the pit. The test pit was located within the area originally occupied by a semi-circular quay adjacent to the storeroom building. Layer three represented material used to infill the quay. It produced pottery dating from 1760-1780, which may therefore have given a date for the original infilling. Test pit 3 (Building SO23) was excavated against the north wall of the building and the limestone rubble footings of the structure were exposed to the depth of bedrock in the base of the pit. Historic plans showed a smith's shop on this site from at least 1831 onwards, but the date of the present building was not known. Layers 3 and 4 represented levelling material associated with the construction of the existing building, and pottery found within layer 4 dated it to post-1780. [Au(adp)] |
