Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken across the site in advance of redevelopment on Monteith Estate. Six trenches were opened, each 2m by 10m, which revealed recent post-medieval features dating from the 19th century. These were associated with the streets and housing which predated the present buildings. The site had subsequently been cleared and was covered by demolition and levelling deposits of which those in the north probably originated from the construction of the Hertford Union Canal. There was no evidence for earlier archaeologial activity despite the proximity of the site to known archaeological remains. [Au(adp)] |
