Abstract: |
<summary>Continued work at the site was commissioned as part of the City Council's capital programme and as part of the County Council's Older Urban Areas Regeneration Programme. Several phases of work were undertaken, including the reduction of the ground level between Arundel Tower and Forty Steps. This revealed the wall-walk area which was then restored. Most of the work was on the tower itself. Two soak-aways were dug, revealing the line of the natural brickearth cliff against which the wall had been built and a series of dump layers associated with the construction of the tower. This tower is unique in Southampton as it was built to accommodate guns. Other evidence was found for a possible second staircase, including foundations and quoins. Work was also done on the roof of the tower, which was overlain with modern slabs. These were removed and numbered for replacement. The soil beneath contained many fragments of locally made clay pipe. Part of an earlier rooftop was also revealed beneath the soil. This was in poor condition and its machicolations had been blocked with 18th century bricks. The construction of the parapet wall was also examined and part of it was found to have been constructed at a later date. {italon}Sec(abr/adp)(1b){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} SOU 409 (SCC HM investigation identification no) |
