Abstract:
The site of the proposed development lay within an area of medieval occupation known from excavations performed by Cleveland County Archaeology Section. That project examined an area located just to the south of Union Street and identified at least seven phases of medieval activity sealed and protected by a considerable deposit of post-medieval demolition debris. In order to assess the likelihood of further medieval deposits surviving within the area of the development, three evaluation trenches were excavated. Two of these, trenches A and B, were located within the immediate vicinity of the 1980's excavation and were found to contain the remains of Victorian cellars filled with demolition deposits to a depth exceeding 1.2m. The third, Trench C, was located 10m to the south of the Borough Hall and upon excavation revealed a complex sequence of post-medieval construction and demolition deposits of low archaeological potential and exceeding 1.2m in depth. Subsequent to the recording of this trench, a machine cut sondage through the basal deposits at the eastern end of the trench was made, and the spoil from this exercise examined. Medieval deposits containing distinctive, unabraded pottery were encountered at a depth of c.1.9m, immediately overlying natural sand. [Au(abr)]
