Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a housing development which had been identified by an earlier desk-based assessment as being of very high archaeological potential. Trenches were excavated within two parts of the site, Area A and Area C. Four features were recorded in Area A, of which one may have represented the very base of a cultivation mark; this contained a single sherd of mid to late Bronze Age pottery. One feature contained post-medieval material and a residual sherd of Saxon pottery. A medium-sized pit was also recorded. Within Area C, two sections of ditch with similar profiles and fills were revealed. These may originally have formed sections of a single field boundary. Neither contained any dating evidence. Three shallow sections of post-medieval linear features appeared to represent two parallel features with a probable agricultural function, such as drainage. A number of small pits and post-holes were also recorded. Fill material within these features indicated that they were probably contemporary with the pit found in Area A. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during the excavation of foundation and service trenches for specified houses and an adjacent access road, and that mitigation proposals for another part of the site should be submitted by the developer.
