Abstract
The curious case of the Queen's Hotel York
Harvey L Sheldon
1
Recounts a tangled tale of inertia and red tape which resulted in a prime site for Roman York being given far too little time for examination in advance of redevelopment. The principal difficulty is that even in a city designated AAI (Area of Archaeological Importance) there are not necessarily any funds made available for excavation in advance of destruction. Observance of the Environmental Impact regulations of 1988 would at least help (see also 89/1423).

Increased pressures have led to more intensive survey in areas at particular risk, and the dramatic increase in afforestation has resulted in important new discoveries in Perthshire and elsewhere. Resources to set up an additional survey unit for afforestation areas have recently been granted.
The Brooks, Winchester - an update

Substantial remains of a large RB masonry building with portico and hypocaust (used to at least mid-4th century), and of another with a fine polychrome mosaic, were found. Med properties of known tenants were examined, and an important collection of cullet, with RB and Saxon window and vessel glass, represents an unusual find for the Saxon period. The old Winchester Market site proved too wet for use during the whole Roman period. Excavation has now ceased.
