Recent fieldwork has established the existence of two kilns, at Mondragone and Albinia, north of Naples and Rome respectively. Their output of types Dressel 1A and 1B indicates that Mondragone was operating from late 2nd to second half of 1st century BC, and Albinia slightly later since Dressel 2-4 are also present. In both cases bricks and some coarse pottery were also being fired. Au

Structural and stylistic analysis of the earliest remains has revealed the building sequence; documentary evidence dates this early work to 1162-78, and the architectural details imply a hitherto unrecognized phase in the Transitional of northern Britain which antedates the Byland group. The seminal importance of St Andrews was felt in Arbroath, Jedburgh, Hexham and Tynemouth. Au(abr)

Describes a miniature hoard from Hut 168 at Mucking, the first such hoard of sceattas to come from a non-funerary context, and providing in addition a date for the Saxon settlement, c 690. See also S E Rigold in Brit Numis J, 47, 1977 (1978), 127-8.

Twelve matrices in two types are figured and described; they belong to late 12th and 13th centuries (when they are associated with burgesses and minor officials) and on into 14th (when they have lost their 'public' orientation and become more private items). By late 14th century they had given place to signet-rings.
