Abstract
Lake Settlement Project --; from the deep waters
Christina Fredengren
0
Brief report on a project examining archaeological material emanating from Irish Lakes, and in particular aiming to increase understanding of sites such as crannogs, landing places, monastic sites and fishing places. The overall aim is to get a better grasp of how people related to lakes at different points in time and how that connected to their dwelling activities. In particular the project set out to investigate patterns of long-term change and continuity in lake-settlement over time, and the diverse roles of lake-settlements in the landscape, through regional projects as well as a series of cameoprojects. The research portfolio includes Kinale I, a regional landscape study of the area around Lough Kinale in the Irish Midlands from the Mesolithic to the present; Kinale II, the excavation of a Mesolithic lake-platform which was used through into the Neolithic transition; a survey of the Upper Shannon lakes in the northwestern counties of Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon; the role of lakes and crannogs as places where human remains have been deposited and the distinction between these sites as settlements or ritual places; and limited fieldwork in the area of County Antrim where the Lisnacrogher Iron Age hoard was found.
Dating the onset of cereal cultivation in Britain and Ireland: the evidence from charred cereal grains
Alex Douglas Brown
1042 - 1052
The author reviews the current evidence for radiocarbon-dated first use of cereals, distinguishing between dates from charcoal in contexts with cereals, and dates from the charred grains themselves. The charred grains begin to appear around 4000 cal BC and become prominent in settlements between 3800 and 3000 cal BC. It is argued that this correlates well with the appearance of megalithic tombs (3800-3500 cal BC) and argues for a relatively rapid adoption of the Neolithic package during an experimental phase of two centuries, 4000-3800 cal BC. The early cereals reported in the pollen record (from 5000 BC) are attributed to wild species.
300 years of context for British archaeology

Fashion versus reason -- then and now
Alex Alexander Bentley
1071 - 1073
The author discusses models of culture evolution, ranging from that of independent decision making to that of random copying, in the context of their applicability to prehistoric studies, and also in relation to academic writing.
