Abstract
Excavation versus sustainability in situ; a conclusion of 25 years of archaeological investi...
David J Tomalin
Paul Simpson
John M Bingeman
3 - 42
Discusses two wrecks -- the Assurance (lost in 1753) and the Pomone (lost 1811). Archaeological evidence from the Pomone is compared with two surviving sister ships and the presumption of incomprehensible `scrambling' on Muckleroy Class 5 wreck sites is robustly challenged. The organisation and methodology of twenty-five years licensed investigations on the site is reviewed, and it is concluded that the UK policy regarding the invasive investigation of historic shipwrecks cannot be readily reconciled with the principles of `sustainability' embodied in European Agenda 21.

US protection of underwater cultural heritage beyond the territorial sea; problems and prospects

Current US treatment of underwater remains beyond its territorial waters is analysed in the light of Law of the Sea principles and the UNESCO Draft Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.
The Studland Bay wreck, Dorset, UK; : hull analysis
Mikkel H Thomsen
69 - 85
A report on the remains of the hull of a presumed sixteenth-century ship excavated between 1984 and 1992. The paper demonstrates how much can be learned about construction and design from in situ recording. The vessel is compared with other vessels of the so-called Iberian-Atlantic tradition, and rigging modifications are suggested. Artefactual evidence suggests that the vessel was wrecked in the early-sixteenth century (pre 1530).
Drowned and deserted: a submerged prehistoric landscape in the Solent, England
Garry Momber
86 - 99
Discusses the significance of the submerged landscape containing worked flint tools found at -11m OD off Bouldnor, Isle of Wight, in 1999. A review of coastal sites in northern Europe suggests that many similar sites should exist around the coast of southern England, and that many Mesolithic coastal sites are now submerged as a result of isostatic shifts and eustatic fluctuations. Outline proposals are suggested for the location, protection and recording of such sites.
The application of the Submetrix ISIS 100 Swath Bathymetry system to the management of underwater sites; [Technical communication]
Garry Momber
Mathew Geen
154 - 162
A report on the application of interferometric sonar equipment for topographical survey of the site of the wreck of HMS Pomone (lost in 1811) -- see also 2001.
Quantitative non-destructive analysis of metals in artefacts; [Technical communication]
Robert Walker
Alexzandra Hildred
163 - 166
Describes the methods used to determine quantitatively the respective amounts of different metals in bimetalic artefacts, in this case lead shot containing a core of iron or flint.
