The first residue analysis blind tests: results and lessons learnt

Twenty-eight stone flakes were produced, sterilised and then used for a variety of tasks involving the processing of plants and animal products. One set of used flakes was stored in sealed plastic bags; the other set was buried in compost for a month and then exposed to open-air conditions for three days. The bagged tools were used for a blind test (Test One). Test Two used the tools that had been buried in compost to study the effects of acidic, organic-rich deposits on plant and animal residues. The Test Two results intimate that animal residues are more sensitive to certain burial and exposed conditions than plant residues.
The identification of shipwreck sites: a Bayesian approach

The paper focuses on the analysis of archaeological shipwrecks, and develops a system to assess and quantify the level of confidence that can be attached to the association of a historical vessel with a scattered wreck site. The linking of a historic vessel with the wreck site is treated as a probabilistic process, and Bayesian methods are employed to estimate the confidence with which a particular vessel is linked to a wreck site and to update this confidence as new evidence is introduced. The approach is demonstrated on a series of wreck sites from North America.
A non-destructive technique for measuring ceramic porosity using liquid nitrogen

To measure ceramic porosity, archaeologists have borrowed well-established methods from the material sciences. However, these methods can have drawbacks for archaeological applications including the potential to damage archaeological residues contained within the sherd, the need for expensive equipment, and/or the use of hazardous materials. The paper introduces a new, non-destructive method for measuring porosity based on the infusion of liquid nitrogen into the sherd. A comparison of results obtained from this method with those obtained from other approaches indicates that the technique produces reliable results.

The aim of this study was to develop a model for the estimation of original grain weight from the dimensions of charred grains, taking into account the effect of carbonization. For this purpose, extant grains of wheat and barley were experimentally carbonized at three temperature levels (200, 250, 300 °C) and under two atmospheric conditions (oxidant, reducing). Weight, length (L), breadth (B) and thickness (T) were measured before and after carbonization. The products L×B and L×T provided the best estimation of grain weight and were relatively stable across treatments. As a case study, grain weight models were applied to grains from a range of Spanish sites.
