Suggests the decline of the druids should be seen in the context of the Roman Conquest and not as a factor in LIA social development.

A paper drawing together for the first time all branches of evidence pertaining to a site known for its large and diverse group of rare Central Gaulish pipeclay figurines. The burial also contained a wide range of other Roman artefacts including ten unguent flasks, twelve pottery vessels, a clay picture lamp, two glass vessels, a bronze vessel, numerous bone and iron fragments from a funerary couch, and thirty-four coins (contemporary imitations of aes of Gaius and Claudius). Its chance discovery in the mid-nineteenth century means there is no record of its archaeological context. A mid-first-century AD date is thought likely. There are two appendices in tabulated form on bone fragments and their position on the couch (81--3) and the coins (84).

Work from the late 1960s onwards is said to have transformed knowledge of the fort, associated vicus and a range of other sites including a villa and the stone bridge that is the subject of this article. It is thought to be perhaps the most comprehensive range of associated sites of this period known in northern Britain. There is an appendix entitled: `A bridge too far or a dam?: `The Piercebridge formula'' (130).

Re-examination of five rectangular, defensive enclosures astride Watling Street at Uxacona (Redhill, Shropshire), Pennocrucium (Water Eaton, Staffordshire), Letocetum (Wall, Staffordshire), Manduessedum (Mancetter, Warwickshire) and Tripontium (Churchover, Warwickshire). It is not thought the evidence supports their interpretation as burgi constructed in the aftermath of the fourth-century Barbarian conspiracy.

Evidence from sites across Great Britain is brought together to increase awareness of the existence and utility of this information. There is an appendix which provides details of radiocarbon dates for sites mentioned in the text (267--8).

A rectangular enclosure with a potentially metalled interior was first noticed on RAF vertical photographs taken in 1990, visited in 1991 and investigated by the Oxford University Archaeological Society in 1996--98. It may be a military training ground.
