A report on some of the EIA pottery recovered from six seasons of excavation at one of Yorkshire's largest hillforts, carried out between 1939 and 1972 under the late W J Varley. Previous work on the site and the excavation archive are summarised. Material from two locations (Site 32 and Site 35) is considered and the circumstances of recovery are briefly described. The pottery from site 32 was found in association with medieval pottery and coins of Henry II and Henry III. That from site 35 was found during excavation of a section through the rampart which sealed a Neolithic floor (dated to 2110~±~130 bc by 14C). The Iron Age pottery is catalogued and its significance in a regional and national context is discussed. There is an `Appendix: radiocarbon and thermoluminescence dates' (22--3) which corrects those previously published (see 77/4384).

Presents the results of excavations in advance of building work on the interior of the ringwork. Documentary evidence is cited for the history of the site and its association with Robert de Brus and the Danby Estate. Two trenches were excavated: the southern trench revealed a 4m wide ditch and stone revetment (possibly a bridge abutment) and the northern trench revealed the foundations of an agricultural building of unkown date. A short report on the finds includes `The Pottery' (46) by B E Vyner and note on the padstones.

Reports on a recent RCHME survey of the standing buildings and earthworks comprising the remains of the palace of the medieval archbishops of York; these are also studied in relation to their setting. Drawing on evidence from the survey, combined with that from documentary sources and aerial photographs, the article summarises the history of Cawood and the archbishops' Sherburn estate before considering topographical evidence for the planned development of the town.

Heraldic motifs on the spandrels of the choir arcades are used to support documentary and other historical evidence in demonstrating that the building was not begun until 1393.

Summarises two decades of church archaeology under the auspices of the Wakefield Diocesan Advisory Committee. Investigations generally included monitoring of structural alterations, excavation of service trenches, recording of tombs and vaults, and surveys of churchyard memorials.

Amongst many interests, Dr Raistrick was a noted student of the industrial archaeology and landscape history of the Pennines.
