A chronological survey of early steel-framed and reinforced-concrete buildings, focusing on the years between 1860 and 1900. The latter part of the article looks at the large scale use of steel and concrete in the north of England through to the end of the inter-war period.

Discusses the complex phasing of the buildings of the former Crown Pipeworks, based on evidence from an archaeological survey conducted between 1993 and 1996. The earliest buildings were constructed on an area taken out of the common in the early seventeenth century. These buildings were used for a variety of functions until the pipeworks was established in 1881 and the buildings were converted to new uses.
