Abstract
Power Systems in Four Gwynedd Slate Quarries
David Gwyn
83 - 100
Analyses documentary sources and fieldwork evidence in order to examine the ways in which the quarries (Penhryn, Pen yr Orsedd, Rhiwbach and Rhos) made use of a variety of different power sources in the years 1898 to 1934.
Textile Mills for Twente: The Case of Beltman versus Stott
Ronald Stenvert
101 - 116
Assesses the extent to which the Lancashire cotton mills influenced those at Twente in the Netherlands in terms of building design. It is found that G Beltman and other local architects had designed most of the buildings, but that the skills of Lancastrian architects such as Sidney Stott were called upon for designing large spinning mills or mills integrated with weaving sheds.
Evolution of the Pre-Cornish Beam Engine House
David E Bick
117 - 135
Analyses the standing remains of pre-Cornish engine houses (those with indoor vertical cylinders operating outdoor pump-rods via an overhead beam).
Appendix 1; Plan Ratios and Bob-Wall Ratios
133
Appendix 2; Surviving Pre-Cornish Beam Pumping Engine Houses
134 - 135
Lists some forty engine houses with substantial above-ground remains.
Nature Conservation and Post-Industrial Landscapes
John Box
137 - 146
Examines the importance of abandoned pits, quarries and industrial sites as habitats for plants and animals, and considers their consequent value to local communities. It is asserted that the landscapes produced by the industrial age need to be conserved just as much as the landscapes derived from the agricultural age.
