Abstract
The Rolt Memorial Lecture, 1994; Engineering Works in Rural Areas
Edwin Course
151 - 164
The paper considers the location and sites of these works, their labour force, and the range of their products. It concludes with several case studies of engineering works in Hampshire and Dorset.
The Mills of Meaux
Michael J T Lewis
165 - 179
The history of three monastic watermills (Ashdyke, Foredyke, and Meaux Abbey) and their water supplies in the marshlands of the Hull valley is traced from the records of the abbey. Occupying marginal sites where only a meagre head was available, and subsequently turned into tide mills with an equally meagre supply of tide water, the mills offer a rare insight into the medieval approach to water power in difficult circumstances.
Establishing a Typology for the Buildings of the Floor Malting Industry
Amber Patrick
180 - 200
A study of floor maltings in England attempts to establish a typology by first explaining how malt is made and how the various processes have affected the external features of the buildings. Although the process is universal, there are differences in the way individual maltings are designed and laid out, and this paper examines these differences, identifying a number of distinct types.
Electricity Supply in Shropshire before Nationalisation
Charles Jones
201 - 222
Reports the results of a survey involving site visits to all known generating station sites, supplemented by study of old photographs and documents. A previously unnoticed station was revealed at Clun, and the existence of a hydro-electric station was confirmed at Ludlow. Subsidiary stations, distribution structures, and related street furniture are also discussed.
