Abstract
Obituary; Sonia Rolt OBE FSA 15 April 1919--22 October 2014
Neil Cossons
1 - 3
Obituary for Sonia Rolt, an activist for preserving Britain's industrial heritage, whose love of canals and their people began during the Second World War when she lived and worked on a narrow boat. With her husband, Tom Rolt, she was an early supporter of the Inland Waterways Association and the Talyllyn Railway, later working for the Landmark Trust, the National Trust and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Underground Electric Lighting in the 1880s; Clayton Mine, Ecton, Staffordshire
John W Barnatt
20 - 32
A detailed archaeological appraisal of the accessible underground workings at Clayton Mine was carried out in 2008 as part of a general assessment of the Ecton Mines at Wetton in Staffordshire, within the Peak District, for English Heritage. New findings forced a reappraisal of the main engine chamber area from its creation in the 18th century through a series of modifications in the 19th century. One discovery was that a small chamber to one side had good evidence, in the form of objects discarded on the floor, pointing to the undocumented 1880s use of electricity for lighting '“ Clayton Mine was abandoned in 1889/90. Archaeological excavations in 2014 followed up this important discovery, and are reported in this article. LD
Evaporating Legacies; Industrial Heritage and Salt in Cheshire, UK
Jonathan G A Lageard
Ian Drew
48 - 61
This paper examines the nature and legacies of the salt industry in Cheshire and recommends action to avoid losing an understanding of its fragmentary heritage. Brine and rock salt occurring in the natural environment have led to significant industrial development in Cheshire over the last two millennia. Technologies for salt exploitation have varied in scale and location, and their ephemeral nature has often left few traces in the landscape. Cheshire salt legacies include the unplanned consequences of subsidence, but also informal opportunities, for instance in nature conservation and recreation. Salt industry heritage in Cheshire is the central justification for the new Weaver Valley Regional Park which seeks to promote future social and economic wellbeing, but the salt legacies which delimit its area deserve sufficient recognition and wider communication.
