Abstract
The Marble Quarry, Iona, Inner Hebrides
David Viner
18 - 27
A survey of the marble quarry on Iona was undertaken in 1972. This article summarises the geology of the island before looking at documentary references to the marble and to the quarry itself, the latter being relatively few. Fieldwork comprised a ground survey of the quarry, measured drawing of the marble-cutting frame and a detailed photographic record of all other items of machinery and equipment. Remains of buildings used as living accommodation for the quarrymen are also present. It is suggested that, together with the declining market caused by the outbreak of war, the difficulties of transportation caused by its isolation and exposed position had brought the quarry to an end by 1914. Patching, Scouring and Commoners; The Development of an Early Industrial Landscape
Brian S Osborne
37 - 42
The primary purpose of this paper is to illustrate the effect of extractive and processing activities upon the landscape and society of north-east Glamorgan in the late 18th century. The historical background to the industrialisation of the area is given and the physical effects on the local environment of the time are described. The article concludes by highlighting the importance of considering industrial relics in the context of the landscape which they produced. Relict industrial landscapes include tangible evidence relating to social history as well as industrial processes and are worthy of detailed archaeological investigation. LD
Moira Furnace
Marilyn Palmer
David Palmer
63 - 69
Article focusing on an early 19th-century iron furnace and foundry on the west Leicestershire coalfield. The historical background is described, and excavation by the Leicestershire Industrial History Society of the remains of an associated bridge is mentioned. Excavation to locate the blast main at the furnace had been unsuccessful to date, but further work was planned in 1976. Although the furnace and foundry were Scheduled in 1974, associated structures including the engine house had recently been demolished and the long-term preservation of the site appeared doubtful. LD
The Holberrow Green Windmill; An Attempt at the Interpretation of Visible Eviden...
C J Johnson
73 - 80
The Holberrow Green windmill is not well documented. This article sets out to demonstrate what can be deduced about the structure of a windmill and the machinery that it once contained from the remaining visible evidence. The structure and machinery of tower mills in general is first outlined, prior to a detailed description of the remains of the Holberrow Green windmill itself. The available documentary evidence is also considered. A reconstruction drawing showing the machinery of the mill, created using the visible evidence, is presented. LD
