Abstract
Excavation; the Role of Archaeology
David Cranstone
119 - 125
The author describes some techniques of late 20th century archaeological excavation on industrial sites, drawing on his own experience on mining and metallurgical sites; it is hoped that the conclusions will be more widely applicable. He highlights the importance of detailed factual recording, high-quality excavation methods where appropriate, the study of process residues, and the integration of detailed building recording with the process of excavation.
The Langcliffe Quarry and Limeworks
Michael Trueman
126 - 144
This article describes the survey of a large late 19th to early 20th century limeworks and associated Hoffman limekiln near Settle, North Yorkshire. The survey results are combined with oral testimonies and documentary evidence to provide an account of the origin, development and operation of the site. This includes a detailed account of the Hoffman kiln. The conclusion assesses the site within its historical context.
The History and Archaeology of the Calke Abbey lime-yards
Garry Marshall
Marilyn Palmer
Peter Neaverson
145 - 176
The Calke Abbey estate of the Harpur Crewe family in Derbyshire, now the property of The National Trust, possesses what is probably the largest concentration of lime-kilns in Great Britain. Through the fortunate survival of the estate papers, it has been possible both to reconstruct the history of the lime-yards and to relate the documentary and physical evidence. Selective excavation of kilns in the yards has enabled the construction of a typology for the late 18th and 19th centuries.
Bersham Ironworks Excavations; 1987-1990 Interim Report
Stephen Grenter
177 - 192
This paper describes the results, to date, of archaeological excavations at the site of Bersham Ironworks, near Wrexham, Clwyd. The works date from c 1717 to 1812, and from 1763 was one of the ironworks of John Wilkinson. Surviving buildings are described, together with other buildings and structures revealed by excavation, including a waggon way, coking facilities, blast furnace, air furnaces and foundry remains. Finally, the paper attempts to draw the results of the excavations and documentary evidence together to show how the works expanded in the latter decades of the 18th century.
The Historical Manuscripts Commission and the history of British business and industry
N W James
193 - 196
Article highlighting the fact that the resources of the Historic Manuscripts Commission (HMC) are under-used by industrial archaeologists. Underlying this is the split between museums and archives, monuments and manuscripts commissions, which has led to a compartmentalization of sources of knowledge. The history and functions of the HMC are outlined in the article, including the establishment at the end of the Second World War of the National Register of Archives. LD
