Discusses the chronological developments which have been neglected in recent studies of the Orkney Neolithic; and argues a shift from small, family-based territorial markers towards fewer, larger tombs providing ceremonial foci for much larger groups.

Of eleven ring ditches near Milfield henge, two were excavated. Site 1 is interpreted as a hengiform building, with burials added. Site 2 was a penannular enclosure with central cremation surrounded by a ring of stones (removed); Bleasdale compares. Plant remains, 14C dates.

The study aimed to elucidate hillfort activities and to determine whether helpful patterns can be derived from artefacts in subsoil features. Statistical techniques distinguished some patterns. Winklebury did not engage in specialized craft production, round houses had various functions, and four-posters were non-domestic, ie granaries. Data from Winnall and Aldermaston compared.

Two farmsteads on the coastal plain were examined. The Iron Age one (2nd-1st centuries BC) helped elucidate the 'saucepan' and 'Aylesford-Swarling' pottery transition, and provided information on agriculture and small-scale industry, mainly metalworking. A small sample of an RB farmstead was also examined, dating 1st-2nd centuries AD.

The study utilized a full battery of sedimentological techniques. Almost all the deposits derive from glacial processes and were reworked into the cave in a variety of ways, from Zone III to modern times. Occupation from Creswellian onwards, but a late start to Upper Palaeo in N England is indicated (not before mid-Zone III).

Numerous aerial discoveries in 1984 included a henge at Bow which yielded an atypical flint assemblage.
