Abstract:
This volume investigates the history, geology, manufacture, and incidents surrounding the Stone of Destiny, including the infamous snatching of the stone from the Coronation Throne at Westminster Abbey on Christmas Day 1950 and the return of the stone to Scotland on St Andrew's Day in 1996. The significance of the stone is explored against the framework of a wider European use of stones and thrones in the making and investing of kings, a tradition that may date back to the Iron Age. SH
