NN 902185. An adult and a child had been buried south of the altar together with three ovoid pots and a shallow pan of late 15th/early 16th century; this practice provides a link with medieval France.

There is no justification for the view that kingdoms allied to Rome took over responsibility for the defence of the north after AD 369. The absence of post-369 east Yorkshire pottery north of Hadrian's Wall is decisive. After a peaceful 3rd century during which units south of Hadrian's Wall were withdrawn, new units were brought into this area, presumably as part of a reaction to the new menace of the Picts. Rome lost control north of the Wall in 367; the Roman names of the rulers of the kingdoms that then arose are a result of Christianity, not of love for Rome. BD
