[SH 508702] The monument, which has been re-studied in view of the information obtained at Newgrange, must be regarded as a two-period site, consisting firstly of a henge-type monument with ditch and possibly outer bank surrounding a near-circular enclosure. Within the enclosure were some standing stones and cremation pits, insufficiently examined to give a complete picture of their nature and inter-relationships. A large pit was dug in the centre of the enclosure in which objects, possibly of a ritual character, were placed. Not enough evidence now exists to determine if this pit contained a central post or pillarstone. Secondarily, a megalithic tomb of passage-grave type was erected within the confines of the ditch. The two stones lying on and next to the Central Pit of the henge must be attributed to the activities of the builders of the megalith. It is not possible to determine if these builders were responsible also for the activity outside the kerb in the entrance area, since the relationship between the various features encountered there was not determined during W J Hemp's excavations in the 1920s. Survey in 1966 of the largest known group of practice camps in the Roman Empire largely confirmed the observations and map of Thomas Price (1811), and fortunately denudation has been less than he forecast. Three camps now lie under the modern town, but the remainder can be traced by one means or another The quality of Price's observation was excellent; he plotted relative distances between camps with surprising accuracy, and carefully recorded the camp-entrances including the titulae which he did not understand. An up-to-date description and map of the camps is provided, and the appendix explains why the term titula is preferred to the customary usage of tutula.
