A Late Iron Age brickearth quarry, associated features and two mid--late Roman structures, all uncovered in a watching brief. Other similar examples of Roman-period enclosures/structures to the main one excavated are discussed. The `Late Iron Age and Roman Pottery' was reported on by S Martin (17--19), with notes on `The Roman pottery' (15) by C Wallace, `Miscellaneous Finds' (15) by H Major and `Faunal remains' (15) by A Wade.

The excavations recorded parts of two mid-Roman town houses in Insula 20 of Roman Colchester, a dispersed late third-century coin hoard, medieval robbing and pitting and buildings of fourteenth to seventeenth century date fronting onto the High Street. D Shimmin contributes `A note on the development of the High Street area between West and East Stockwell Streets' (63--64). The coins are studied by John A Davies (64--6), with the results of XRF analysis of the dispersed hoard reported by M Heyworth in `Analysis of 3rd--century coins' (66--70) and notes on the most stratigraphically significant coins (70--1) contributed by J A Davies & N Crummy. The Roman pottery was studied by R P Symonds & C J Going (70--2), including descriptions of votive pots by the latter and notes by John Cotter are drawn on for the post--Roman pottery (72--3). Reports on `The Roman and post-Roman glass' (73) and `The small finds' (73--80) are by Nina Crummy, that on `The clay tobacco pipes' (80--1) by Joy Hind & Nina Crummy and a `Summary of the Roman and post-Roman tile and brick' (81--2) by Nina Crummy. Notes on `The painted wall plaster' (82) are uncredited; P Murphy contributes an `Assessment of environmental remains' (82).

The buildings, yard, multi-phase field-system and garden of a middle-status, mixed farming settlement in north west Essex, occupied from the late-twelfth century until abandonment in the mid-fourteenth century. This was one of the most comprehensive excavations of a medieval rural site in Essex to date (also excavated were a palaeochannel of the Mesolithic period and Roman features). The specialist reports include `Medieval and Post-Medieval pottery' (127--51) by Helen Walker, with a report on the results of residue analysis by John Evans (151); `Small Finds' (151--6) by H Major, with Owen Bedwin, David Andrews & Pat Ryan; `Palaeoenvironmental Studies' (156--66) by Peter Murphy & Patricia Wiltshire, with Val Fryer & Mark Robinson; `Animal bone' (166--8) by Alec Wade and `Marine mollusca' (168--9) by J M Winder & K Reidy.
