An unenclosed scatter of pits and post-holes lay around a rectilinear structure, 4m x 2. Five unurned cremations were also present. A typical LBA flint assemblage and pottery indicate the early 1st millennium BC. This is the first Essex LBA settlement excavated on boulder clay. Au (abr)

Excavations revealed traces of late 1st and 2nd century occupation and a ritual horse burial. Au (abr F B)

Two excavations have identified the E and S sides of a substantial early Roman enclosure. Occupation beginning in 1st century AD declined before mid 2nd century but saw a resurgence in early 4th. No building was located. There is evidence of LBA/EIA occupation, and a quern for ?mustard came from a postmed pit. Au (abr FB/Ed)

Small-scale excavations within the SE corner of the monastic precinct established its position and that of three buttresses of the monastic church. A Christian cemetery of Middle Saxon to early 11th century date may be associated with the pre-Conquest timber and stone churches recently discovered near the present church. A grave contained a late 10th/early 11th century bronze plate of Ringerike style. Other finds ranged from Meso material to a late 14th century Madonna and part of a 15th century limekiln. Trial work revealed med pits and ditches including a substantial ditch ?of the N bailey. Au (abr)

A flint-and-stone walled building with an undercroft is interpreted as the Moot Hall of c 1250-1670/80. A documentary survey is included. RB pottery comes from several sites around the Market Place. A boundary ditch, filled in the first half of the 2nd century AD, may be part of the 'eldeworth', the old enclosure which surrounds the Market Place. There was a little prehistoric pottery, and finds of Much Hadham RB ware in the Lower Lea valley are noted, with a gazetteer of Roman coins from Waltham. Au (abr F B/Ed)
