Post-Medieval Archaeol 36

An excavation produced a sequence of waterfront development and river defences from the medieval to Victorian periods. Six distinct phases of post-medieval wharves were excavated, each phase consisting of timber revetments and associated land reclamation dumps along with a variety of waterfront structures and features. The timber structures were built largely from reused boat and ship timbers whilst waste from pottery production was retrieved from several of the reclamation dumps. Describes the rescue excavation of a mid-seventeenth-century to mid-eighteenth-century potter's workshop and kiln. The kiln is paralleled by kilns at Ewenny, South Wales. Includes a description of another contemporary kiln, which was destroyed by contractors before archaeologists were alerted, but of which a photographic record was made. The excavation recovered a large collection of Donyatt pottery with a date range of 1650--1750. Finds included four pieces inscribed with dates, and imitations of the small usual Bristol and Staffordshire slipwares.
