Post-Medieval Archaeol 35

Reviews the archaeological evidence for the medieval and Tudor royal palaces at Richmond. It is primarily concerned with the results of a series of investigations undertaken between 1972 and 1998, but earlier casual observations are also considered. Watching briefs have identified a number of brick structures dated to the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. Of particular importance were the investigations undertaken in the garden of Trumpeter's House, which reveal remains of the Tudor palace, and probably its late medieval precursor, and survey work on the Thames foreshore, which led to the discovery of a palace jetty built in the reign of Elizabeth I. Surviving walls and buildings of the Tudor palace, including the Gatehouse and the Wardrobe are also considered. Reports documentary and archaeological evidence suggesting the foreshore between Narrow Street and the Thames had been reclaimed in the late-sixteenth century, after which wharves were constructed, probably between 1584 and 1602. The excavation revealed a timber wharf, dated dendrochronologically to 1584--85, constructed from horizontal planks fixed to upright posts, supported by iron strapped landward tiebacks, a technique previously known from the early-seventeenth century. A section of revetment perpendicular to the river represented the east side of a small dock or access way from Narrow Street onto the foreshore. This was infilled in 1635 and replaced with a stair leading to the foreshore. The truncated foundations and basement floors of Tudor riverside brick buildings were found. International trade links are attested by the various foreign finds, which include: coins from Portugal, Spain and Havana; German trading tokens; pottery from Persia, south-east Asia, the Rhineland, and north Italy; and Spanish oil jars. Discusses a group of twenty-two glass goblets, dating to the seventeenth century, that have contemporary repairs to their stems. It is suggested that the repairs used are conspicuous and would probably not have been effective in the long term. This paper compares these stems with repaired vessels of other media and periods to ascertain whether there were additional motives for the retention of damaged material culture.

Notes the recovery of a second fragment from a single vessel. Suggests that the two fragments provide enough stylistic evidence to affirm that the vessel was almost certainly made in Tuscany in the first half of the seventeenth century.
