Major report on the first large-scale investigation within the former walled area, on the med waterfront. Although 12th-13th century occupation evidence was much disturbed, the sequence runs from then into modern times: it includes 14th and 15th century structures (timber cistern, storage buildings, dock and quay), domestic and some industrial use in 16th (when dock facilities lay elsewhere), filling in of a disused dock, increasing industrial activity (clay pipe kilns, etc), and purpose-built brick dwellings and commercial properties. Substantial pottery report.
English villages in the Londonderry plantation
Brooke S Blades
257 - 269
The planting of villages was seen as an important means of altering the Ulster landscape into one in which English cultural institutions could flower. Study of these settlements allows the definition of early 17th century English standards for the creation of domestic settlements.
