Some medieval sculpture in Kerry
Peter Harbison
9 - 25
Examination of some long-neglected sculptures shows the hitherto unrecognised importance of the Tralee-Ardfert area in the period AD 1200-1600. As in Ireland generally, there were peaks of activity round about 1300 and again c 1450-1550. Archaism shows in the lingering effect of Romanesque influence and again in the use of some outmoded symbols in late 15th-16th centuries.
The orientation of the recumbent-stone circles of the south-west of Ireland
John W Barber
26 - 39
Investigation of thirty circles in Cork and Kerry in the light of Thom's theories showed that there was a high degree of probability that a significant number, twelve, were orientated on important solar and lunar events. In addition, five circles are likely to have been orientated on the southern limits of the zodiac, and a further ten might have been directed to observation of stars during the period 1800-600 BC. While the circles were not strictly "observatories" they do appear to record an awareness of some of the simpler cycles of major heavenly bodies.
