Abstract: |
Published as an adjunct to a forthcoming excavation report. The `Archaeological Introduction' by R A Hall (211--17) discusses the foundation of the college in 1252, on a site 105m south-east of York Minster, and summarises excavations carried out between 1973 and 1980, which indicate periods of expansion between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The rest of the report is largely concerned with the 412 fragments of architectural masonry found in the Bedern buildings, much of which is thought to have been imported from the twelfth-century Minster when it was rebuilt in the late fourteenth-century. Other fragments, dated to the late twelfth and mid thirteenth centuries, may originally have been part of the Minster or possibly the church of St Mary-ad-Valvas. There is a detailed study of medieval masonry techniques and an analysis of the different types of tooling found on various stones. |
