The project coordinator for Worcestershire explains the aims of this survey of the remains of wartime defensive structures.

Returning from a visit to Austria, the perplexed author asks if Hallstatt is a place, period, style, or culture and decides that it is all of these. Sara Lamb (12--13) gives an authoritative opinion, looking at some artefacts from three Welsh hoards: Pac-y-meirch (Clwyd), Cardiff, and Llyn Fawr (Glamorgan).

Summarises the composition of the artefactual assemblage recovered by fieldwalking (see also 96/1450). This comprised: cores; scrapers; microliths; saws; retouched blades and flakes; borers, awls, and working points; fabricators; burins; utilised blades and flakes; and waste blades, flakes, and burnt flakes.

Publishes part of a report on a meeting of the Worcestershire Archaeological Society, in 1896, at which the proposed survey was discussed. Fifty years later, a photographic survey was set up with financial assistance from the County Council; the project continued until 1964.
