Abstract: |
Excavations, following a contour and geophysical survey, revealed a trapezoidal long cairn, roughly aligned east-west, overlying traces of limited Meso and Neo activity. The cairn was constructed, in 4th millennium bc, in cellular units with orthostats defining two L-shaped chambered areas. The outer cairn formed a drystone facade round the monument with a forecourt and two breaks for entrances. Both chambers contained disarticulated remains of human skeletons, some 30-40 individuals, with some evidence for the ordering of bones. Extensive quarries were found alongside. Trial excavation of Hazleton South long cairn found traces of at least one lateral chamber. Extensive finds catalogues; discussion of environmental evidence, of the importance of the Cotswold-Severn cairns, and of the contribution of the excavation to knowledge of Neo activity in the region.
