Abstract: |
A survey of the standing structure was required for the purpose of future maintenance and repairs and Part 1 describes the defences and the buildings of the inner and outer wards, with many stone-by-stone drawings of elevations. Part 2 gives the history of the castle from 1092 to 1962. Period 1, attested historically only, was probably of earth and timber, late 11th/12th century; Period 2, 12th century, saw the building of the keep and inner gatehouse, and some details like windows survive elsewhere; 3, 13th-15th centuries, more doorways and fireplaces; 4, 16th-19th centuries, further details, addition of brick to the former sandstones; 5, mid-19th-20th centuries, intermittent garrisoning. The castle was the principal English bastion on the west against the Scots in medieval times. |
