Excavation of a river valley site subject to periodic flooding revealed evidence of occupation in the area from the Neolithic through to the medieval period. During the Middle Bronze Age there is evidence that the site was a dumping ground for domestic debris as well as revealing remains of compacted surfaces, drainage ditches and postholes. Three copper alloy pins may have been deliberately placed as votive offerings. Intermittent activity in the vicinity of the site may have continued into the Early Iron Age. Plant remains include emmer and spelt wheat, barley, hazelnut and flax. Evidence of Roman settlement is largely confined to a possible boundary ditch on the borders of a farmstead or villa. Survey of a timber-framed aisled hall house dating to the late-twelfth--early-thirteenth century. The remaining parts of the original timber framework are described in detail, plus the remains of an open hearth revealed beneath the modern floors of the former hall. Later phases of development and reorganisation are also described, including a stone cross-wing added to the south of the hall, probably during the later thirteenth century.

Survey of the extent to which the coming of the railways changed the economic and demographic character of both rural and urban communities in East Kent.

Description and discussion of a medieval font at Newenden parish church, apparently of French limestone and belonging to a group of Boulonnais origin; also of a lead font at Brookland parish church with strong similarities to one at Saint Evroult-de-Montfort, Normandy.
