Some two-unit houses in Somerset
E H D Williams
28 - 38
Five houses ranging in date from 14th to 17th century are illustrated, chiefly by plans, and described. They vary in social status from manor to farmhouse but in all cases the houses are two separate but contingent living units. In two houses the separation was part of the original planning; in the remainder an annexe, without communication, has been added to an earlier structure. Reasons for this planning oddity (extended family, priest accommodation, or Court House) are discussed. P W D

ST 190327. Cutting of a bridleway on Cothelstone Hill at 1000ft OD revealed a scatter of flints and cherts including 25 scrapers, arrowheads and knives. This represents the first evidence of Neo activity in the high Quantocks, but other sites are beginning to turn up.
