Abstract: |
Details of the final phases of work associated with the Iona water pipeline (see also 94/704 & 94/1152). In the first part of the report G A Turnbull (5-14) describes the results of excavations adjacent to St Mary's Abbey in `Iona, Phase 3: the water mains' -- little of archaeological interest was recorded. In a contribution on the `Pipe installation watching brief' G MacGregor (12-14) reports that potential damage to archaeologically sensitive deposits was limited by the use of the so-called `pipe breaking' method. The second part, `Iona, Phase 4: watching briefs (GUARD 116.5)' by S Bain, J Fletcher & G MacGregor (15-20), comprises reports on observations made on four occasions during the closing stages of the project. An extension of the ditch found in previous investigations was noted. There follows a final summing up of the whole project. A list of `Contexts and photo record' (22 & 24) and a `Harris matrix' (23) are appended. |
