Abstract: |
Investigations into the extent of archaeological material at this presumed Iron Age earth and stone enclosure were prompted by road construction which threatened associated cropmarks. Fluxgate gradiometer and resistivity meter surveys confirmed the location of ditches and other features apparent on aerial photographs. Trial trenches revealed five main phases of activity, although dating evidence was scarce. These included the construction of a metalled road apparently leading up to the entrance of Warden's Dyke, and an area of pits, post-holes and organic material from the summit of the hill relating to human occupation or stock management. Two cobbled areas overlay the road but do not necessarily post-date the use of Warden's Dyke itself. |
