Abstract: |
A geophysical survey and area excavation were carried out on the earthwork enclosure in advance of the M6 extension. Geophysical results were disappointing, although a third, outer bank was located. Within the interior, eight separate blocks of structures were observed. Most of these blocks comprised sequences of circular buildings. A larger structure is interpreted as an animal pen. In the absence of 14C dates, the sequence of structures suggests a long period of occupation. Artefacts were few, consisting of worked stones, querns, and three pottery fragments. A lack of Roman artefacts suggests that the site operated either before the Roman period or considerably later than the retreat from Scotland. Contexts, photographs, drawings, finds, and soil samples are listed under `Appendices' (44-54). |
