Abstract
Rutland and the medieval wool trade
Margaret Bonney
139 - 150
The contribution made by Rutland to the English medieval wool trade is examined, along with that of its neighbouring east Midland counties. Large quantities of wool were exported through Boston from at least the early-fourteenth century, and the profits made from the trade are revealed in a number of case studies of wealthy wool merchants who lived in Rutland from the late-fourteenth century. Oakham, in particular, benefited from the prosperity and philanthropy of these merchants, and echoes of their preoccupations are still reflected in the fabric of the modern town.
The extraction and marketing of Ketton freestone in the nineteenth century
John Cooper
151 - 168
The stone workers of Ketton and the freestone industry during the middle- to late-nineteenth century are examined through various documentary sources.
Rutland history and archaeology in 2003
179 - 184
Numerous short, separately authored summaries of archaeological fieldwork and other historical and archaeological activities and investigations carried out during 2003 in the historic county of Rutland. Entries in the section on archaeological fieldwork are arranged alphabetically by parish.
