D Allen

International Council for Museums of Archaeology and History

European plan for archaeology
Details the launch of a European plan for archaeology by the Council of Europe, resulting from the European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage (1992), and resolutions of the third European Conference of Ministers responsible for the Cultural Heritage. Increased public awareness, the study of urban archaeology culminating in a European handbook, promotion of cultural activity at archaeological sites, and common inventory standards are aimed at.
News
N P Wickenden
Reports on two items arising from the 1993 Museum Archaeologists' Conference. The first is news of a Newnham Council cost-cutting proposal for the Passmore Edwards Museum, which would entail closure of the Romford Road premises, redundancy for the post of Curator, and abolition of the Field Archaeology Service. The second is a motion which urged SMA to press MGC and DNH to promote new legislation for the protection of portable antiquities in England and Wales, noting current Scottish law as a possible model.
Basingstoke museum archaeology reborn
D Allen
A note on new displays of archaeological material at the Willis museum.
Archaeology NVQs
Stephen Douglass
Report from the first meeting of the Archaeology NVQ Implementation Group in York (1993). Items of note include the need to establish up to ten approved assessment centres and recruit up to ten external verifiers.
