Notes from the Trenches; A Resource for Pedagogy
Nicolas R Laracuente
Adrianne Sams

Discusses some of the issues and topics arising from an electronic symposium that took place at the 2012 Society of American Archaeology Meeting in Memphis, Tennessee. Titled Lessons from the Trenches: The Pedagogy of Archaeology and Heritage, the goal of this symposium was to have a wide variety of case studies presenting individual approaches for teaching critical skills and expanding the breadth of topics in which students are trained, in order to allow new archaeologists to engage with issues in the contemporary world in the most effective manner. Papers submitted from different parts of the world introduced a breadth of learning environments.

Summary of research and survey work undertaken by ArcHeritage at the site of Rockley Furnace and Engine House, a Scheduled Monument near Barnsley, South Yorkshire. The project was commissioned on behalf of the South Yorkshire Industrial History Society, and involved the participation and training of local volunteers. Rockley Furnace was a charcoal-fired cold blast furnace, constructed at the beginning of the 18th century; the engine house was built in 1813. The survey produced elevations and profiles of the furnace and engine house alongside earthwork and topographic plans. LD

Phillip A Emery
Aaron Goode
30 - 31
Summarises the findings from excavations undertaken in 2011-12 in advance of redevelopment at York Engineers' Triangle, formerly the York South Motive Power Depot, and explains the significance of the structures revealed. These comprised the remains of three mid-19th century roundhouses and a straight shed, as well as the base of a small octagonal hut believed to have been used as a foreman's and time office and for the storage of oil-fired locomotive lamps. The straight shed was built in 1841 and represents the earliest period of railway development at York. LD
