Describes two seasons of excavation at an enigmatic site that produced evidence for Mesolithic occupation followed by a linear mound (resembling a long barrow), at least one LIA cremation burial, and a post-Roman enclosure. It is suggested that the latter had a ritual function. R Young (8--15) reports on `Flint' and Alison Donaldson reports on `Pollen from the old turf layer under mound of circle' (15--16).

A measured survey of earthworks and visible stone structures.

Pottery recovered during the 1950s is examined and compared with other assemblages -- notably Thorpe Thewles (Cleveland) and Stanwick (N Yorkshire).

The name is thought more likely to have originated from the Welsh Gweir [meaning approximately `bend' or `curve' -- a reference to the river's meandering course] rather than the Romano-British Uedra [possibly `The Water'].

An undated deed in the Durham County Record Office sheds light on earlier medieval estates and settlements in the vicinity of the three eponymous farmsteads.
