Abstract
Excavation of a Mesolithic site at Highcliff Nab, Guisborough
Mags Waughman
1 - 15
Presents the results of a small-scale excavation undertaken in advance of the construction a footpath across Mesolithic and Neolithic/Bronze Age occupation site (see also 97/1351). P Rowe (6--11) reports on `The flint'. B Vyner (11) notes `Pottery' (EBA/MBA). J P Huntley (11--12) reports on `Environmental evidence', comprising bulk-sampled charred plant remains.
A North York Moors Mesolithic marginal site on Highcliff Nab, Guisborough
N H Harbord
17 - 26
Examines a collection of surface scatter flint and other stone objects from the site (see also 97/1352). Situated on the northern scarp edge of the Moors, this marginal site is interpreted as a Late Mesolithic temporary camp used during hunting forays. A possibly Roman jet bead was also found.
Prehistoric occupation at St Giles by Brompton Bridge, North Yorkshire
Peter Cardwell
Greg P Speed
27 - 40
Reports on rescue excavations undertaken on the site of St Giles medieval hospital between 1988 and 1990 because of the threat of river erosion. Medieval and later phases are reported elsewhere (see 97/1703), and this report concentrates on evidence from the Mesolithic to Iron Age, noting a lack of occupation in the Roman and Early Medieval phases evinced by the accumulation of colluvial deposits. Francis Wenban-Smith (33--5) considers the (mostly Meso) `Lithic artefacts'. T G Manby describes `Iron Age pottery' (35--6) and a stone `Spindle whorl' (36). Jacqueline P Huntley (36--7) reports on `Carbonised plant remains'. Maureen McHugh (37--8) discusses `Soil analysis' and considers the interface between colluvial and alluvial deposits. A charcoal-rich layer was radiocarbon-dated to the Late Neo or EBA.
Bonny Grove Farm and Dixon's Bank: two Romano-British settlement sites in Cleveland
Richard G Annis
41 - 60
Reports on geophysical surveys and excavations undertaken in advance of housing development on two sites in Middlesbrough in 1992 and 1993. Two phases of RB occupation (one with a large sub-circular enclosure) and medieval ridge-&-furrow were identified, and geomagnetic survey provided extensive evidence for an RB field system and a possible sub-rectangular enclosure. The `Geophysical survey a Bonny Grove Farm' is reported on by M J Noel (49--50). `Native and Romano-British pottery' is described by B E Vyner (50--4). `The querns' are discussed by D H Heslop (55--6). `Environmental samples from Bonny Grove Farm', by J P Huntley (57--8), indicate that the site was used for production and processing of hulled barley and spelt wheat.
Some medieval churches in County Durham
Peter F Ryder
61 - 91
A series of archaeological surveys of the churches in the Diocese of Durham.
Excavations at Durham Cathedral north door 1991--2
Peter Carne
89 - 98
Reports on excavations undertaken in advance of repaving outside of one of the entrances to the cathedral. Archaeological evidence survived dating from the twelfth century to the present, including medieval foundations, remains of the fifteenth-century Registry, and medieval and later graves (some with carved stone covers).
Bells and bell-casting for Durham Cathedral
Norman Emery
99 - 104
Describes the bells, their inscriptions, and their documented history.
