Abstract
A decade of air survey in Cleveland and the Tees Valley hinterland, and a strategy for air survey in County Durham
L Still
Blaise E Vyner
Robert H Bewley
1 - 10
Describes the survey area, its responsiveness for aerial survey, and the strategies adopted. Results are summarized by archaeological period in preparation for more specific new strategies. This is an area where Fox's highland/lowland division works well. Soil Survey classifications are examined in relation to recorded cropmark distributions. to aid concentration on responsive soils.
Further investigation of the Iron Age and Romano-British settlement site at Catcote, Hartlepool, Cleveland, 1987
Blaise E Vyner
Robin Daniels
11 - 34
Excavation adjacent to the known site produced traces of ?unenclosed settlement, part of an early field system, and further evidence for the Iron Age-RB settlement (fences and a subrectangular building). Native and RB pottery is catalogued; plant remains showed a variety of crops being used, including spelt processed on site.
Chesters and Ulpius Marcellus
G R Stephens
35 - 36
The inscriptions RIB 1463-4 are argued as recording two separate building projects, probably of 184 after the restoration of peace. This allows consequent adjustment of matters like the date of Chesters Wall Period II.
A votive deposit from the River Tees at Piercebridge, County Durham
P John Casey
37 - 42
Catalogue of coins thrown in from the river bridge: there was an emphasis on Severan silver or counterfeits. There are no coins of early 4th century (when other sites have plenty), but a few late 4th century high value silver coins renew the deposition. Many defaced forgeries were suitable for votive use.
The frames of the David pages in the Durham Cassiodorus geometric constructions
Robert D Stevick
43 - 54
St Edwin's Church, High Coniscliffe
Peter F Ryder
55 - 64
A small 12th century church ambitiously remodelled and extended in early 13th.
